I find the comment: "I support the troops but I don't support the war"--very disturbing, its almost a complete contradiction. I have found that troops abroad don't appreciate this comment at all. I suppose you can find anyone to say whatever you want them to say in conjunction with what you want to believe. I just wanted to put that out there.
It does seem to be a sort of a slap in the face to the troops. "I support you but not the work that you are doing..."
I support the troops AND I wish they could be home and out of harms way, but I appreciate their sacrifices and hard work and I hope that they (we) always win.
You know, I was just watching "Alexander" the directors cut today, I got it from the library, and I was thinking, "Wow, I can't believe people really used to fight wars like that." It was so personal and brutal and required such great strength and courage. Our troops today are facing a different sort of war, I think, just as scary, and requiring all the same attributes listed above, but in my imagination, less personal (for better and for worse) and they don't have the assurance that they will be seen as a hero by all their countrymen to keep them going.

Marrie,
Slap in the face is right, I dont know any other serviceman or woman who doesnt feel that way. Of course no one wants to be there but they realize they have to be there and if they left, the blood bath that would take place and we would end up being back there anyway. Oh I dont want to get started on some crazy rant now but I do get what you're saying.

I've always thought that a person is justified not agreeing with the reasons that the politicians give for having troops fighting somewhere.
For example, I don't believe that the Canadian troops in Afghanistan are there for a good reason. They're fighting for people who don't want or appreciate democracy, regardless of how much our Prime Minister tells us so.
However, our government says they have to be there. I don't have to agree with *what my government says* about why they are there. But I absolutely agree with supporting the troops and the job they are doing. Once your countrymen are on the ground and doing a job, regardless of your opinion, it is your duty to support them on the home front.

RED,
Excellent point. However I put it in the perspective of my wife is okay with me being a financial adviser but doesnt like I am with Joe Blow Investements, she doesnt like what they stand for, she doesnt appreciate the work they do to help families grow, she believes they are corrupt--now if I come home I am listening to this, I am confused.
